ABSTRACT

Introduction: Periodontitis is a non-communicable chronic inflammatory disease with a systemic burden. Animal models of induced periodontitis help elucidate the mechanisms by which periodontal inflammation drives systemic effects. Studying this systemic involvement over longer follow-up periods may provide a strong foundation for future research on the association between diseases and periodontitis, particularly in female rats. Therefore, we aimed to compare blood, endocrine, immunologic, renal, and hepatic markers in a rat model of induced periodontitis in females with their control counterparts. Methods: Experimental periodontitis was induced in 20 female Wistar rats by the application and maintenance of silk ligatures on the upper molars. The rats were then assessed for macroscopical analysis, complete blood count, and biochemical, endocrine, and immunologic markers at 21, 28, 42, and 56 days. Results: Chronic periodontal inflammation was observed after 42 days of exposure to the ligatures. Additionally, it was also possible to notice significant systemic manifestations, such as the reduction of triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels, along with an increase in the expression of alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and lactate dehydrogenase. Discussion: The study's findings imply that certain changes can be underscored to highlight a reduced risk of conception. Notably, previous investigations have indicated that subfertile women exhibit lower levels of thyroid hormones and elevated lactate dehydrogenase expression. Despite the absence of preclinical data delineating a possible association between periodontitis and female infertility, the results of this study may prove to be a crucial contribution to both the scientific and medical fields.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to assess how vertical skeletal malocclusion affects oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among a sample of individuals comprising adolescents, young adults, and adults seeking orthodontic treatment. From January 2019 to March 2020, participants were consecutively enrolled. The assessment of OHRQoL involved measurement using the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14). Lateral cephalograms were performed to measure the vertical skeletal divergency with four cephalometric measurements. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed. The Mann-Whitney test was applied to compare OHRQoL scores according to the vertical dimension category. The mean age of the participants ranged between 30.3 ± 14.9 and 29.9 ± 14.4 and there was a majority of female participants, between 64.1% and 65.9%. There were no statistically significant differences observed between hyperdivergent and normodivergent groups in either the total score or any domain of the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Individuals with hyperdivergent facial morphology did not show a reduced OHRQoL compared with a normodivergent facial type.

Background: The declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic by the World Health Organization in 2020 led to the suspension of several clinical practices globally, including dentistry. This study investigates the impact of these restrictions on dental caries experience. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at Egas Moniz University's dental hospital in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area from June 2019 to June 2021. The study involved 3380 participants who were divided into two cohorts: after and before COVID-19 restrictions. Data collection included a questionnaire, full-mouth clinical examinations, and radiographs (panoramic X-rays, bitewings). Results: Before the COVID-19 restrictions, the prevalence of dental caries was 91.8%, with an average DMFT (decayed, missing, and filled teeth) index of 12.13. Post-restrictions, the prevalence decreased to 84.5%, with a DMFT index of 10.99. There was an increase in missing teeth and a decrease in decayed and filled teeth. Additionally, the frequency of toothbrushing declined among participants. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have significantly impacted dental caries experiences and oral health, highlighting a decrease in dental caries, but also a concerning reduction in oral hygiene practices. These results emphasize the importance of customized dental healthcare during public health emergencies to reduce impacts and maintain oral health.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible relationships between polymorphisms in the interleukin-1 (IL-1) A, IL-1B, and IL-1RN genes and concentrations of the inflammatory mediators IL-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF). A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 51 patients with dental implants. Samples from the buccal mucosa were obtained, and genetic analysis was performed using the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for IL-1A and IL-1B and PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis for IL-1RN. For the biochemical analysis, the concentrations of IL-1ß and TNF-α were analyzed using multiplexed fluorescent sphere immunoassays, and PGE2 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In patients with detected IL-1RN polymorphism, there was an increase in the concentration of the three mediators with statistically significant differences in the mean values of TNF-α and PGE2, regardless of peri-implant health status (p = 0.002 and p = 0.049, respectively). The concentrations of all three mediators were positively and significantly correlated (IL-1ß vs. TNF-α Rho = 0.480, p < 0.001; IL-1ß vs. PGE2 Rho = 0.382, p = 0.006; and TNF-α vs. PGE2 Rho = 0.528, p < 0.001). We can conclude that the IL-1RN polymorphism exerts an influence on the PICF immune response, which may explain the influence of this genetic polymorphism on the occurrence of peri-implantitis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this systematic review was two-fold: (i) to evaluate the long-term (≥5 years) stability of the gingival margin position, keratinized tissue width (KTW) and gingival thickness (GT) in sites that underwent root coverage (RC) or gingival augmentation (GA); and (ii) to assess the influence of different local variables on the long-term stability of dental and gingival tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs reporting short-term (i.e., 6-12 months after baseline surgical intervention) and long-term (≥5 years) follow-up data after surgical treatment of adult patients presenting single or multiple mucogingival deformities, defined as sites presenting gingival recession defects (GRDs) and/or (KTW) deficiency (i.e., <2 mm), were considered eligible for inclusion. MEDLINE-PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched for articles published up to 15 May 2023. Mixed-effects multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between KTW, type of surgical procedure and time (i.e., independent variables) on the stability of the gingival margin in sites that received RC or GA therapy. RESULTS: Of the 2569 potentially eligible records, 41 (reporting 40 studies) met the eligibility criteria. Graphical estimates including data from all RC procedures found an upward trend in recession depth (RD) increase over time. Conversely, it was observed that in 63.63% of RC studies and in 59.32% of RC treatment arms KTW increased over time, particularly in sites treated with subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTGs). Conversely, sites that underwent GA procedures generally exhibited an overall reduction of KTW over time. However, sites treated with free gingival grafts (FGGs) showed a decrease in RD after 10 years of follow-up. Three main findings derived from the pooled estimates were identified: (i) Gingival margin stability was associated with the amount of KTW present during short-term assessment (i.e. the greater the KTW at 6-12 months after treatment, the more stable the gingival margin). (ii) The use of autogenous soft-tissue grafts was associated with lower RD increase over time. (iii) Treatment approaches that contribute to the three-dimensional enhancement of the gingival phenotype, as clearly demonstrated by FGG, were associated with gingival margin stability. CONCLUSIONS: The extent of apical migration of the gingival margin appears to be directly related to the amount of KTW and GT upon tissue maturation. Interventions involving the use of autogenous grafts, either SCTG or FGG, are associated with greater short-term KTW gain and lower RD increase over time.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To compare patient-reported outcome measures and additional surgical outcomes after sinus floor elevation (SFE) with osseodensification (OD) versus lateral window (LW), both with simultaneous implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty participants requiring single-implant rehabilitation with residual bone height (RBH) ≤4 mm were enrolled. Pain experience, quality of life (QoL) via the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), analgesics intake, and other symptoms were self-reported for a week on a daily basis. Surgery duration, complications, and implant stability quotient at baseline (ISQ T0 ) and after 6 months (ISQ T6 ) were registered. Participants were followed up for 1 year. RESULTS: From Day 0 (day of surgery) to Day 3, pain experience was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the OD group. OHIP-14 score was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the OD group on all postoperative days, except on Day 5. Average analgesics intake was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the OD group. Surgery mean duration was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in LW compared to OD (71.1 ± 10.4 vs. 32.9 ± 5.3 min). After osseointegration period, all implants were successfully restored with screw-retained crowns. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that OD and LW techniques were similarly effective in SFE with simultaneous implant placement when RBH ≤ 4 mm. However, OD significantly outperformed LW in pain experience, impact on self-perceived QoL, surgery duration, postoperative edema, and analgesics intake.

ABSTRACT

Patients diagnosed with oral cancer frequently exhibit an increased likelihood of experiencing common dental conditions, lower dental health literacy, and a decline in their overall quality of life. However, there is limited understanding on the impact of oral health values on these patients. This study aims to explore the oral health status and their oral health determinants and reported outcomes in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil. This cross-sectional study included patients who were diagnosed with OSCC for the first time. These individuals were administered a questionnaire that collected sociodemographic data, as well as their scores on the oral health value scale (OHVS) and the short-form oral health impact profile. In addition, participants self-reported their experiences with periodontitis and caries using the decayed, missing, filled index. The final sample consisted of 46 OSCC patients, consisting of 34 males and 12 females. The average age of the participants was 70.0 years (±13.2), with most of them being retired (65.2%). There were no differences found between sex regarding age (p = 0.531), employment status (p = 0.114), presence of systemic conditions, smoking habits (p = 0.423), or alcohol consumption (p = 0.404). In the OHVS, there was a statistically significant difference between men and women regarding the retention of natural teeth (p = 0.021). Patients with self-perceived periodontitis exhibited worse functional limitation (p = 0.039) and physical pain (p = 0.049). Regarding dental caries experience, it was observed that a majority of patients had a higher incidence of missing posterior teeth (59.2%). This sample presented a significant decline in oral health, in addition to the diagnosed OSCC. The oral health value and quality of life were severely declined. There is a concerning lack of oral care and health that, consequently, impacts the quality of life of these patients.

ABSTRACT

The World Health Organization member states proposed a comprehensive "Global Strategy on Oral Health," which includes achieving universal oral health coverage by 2030. Challenges and barriers, including persistent inequalities, will hamper the achievement of universal oral health coverage. In low- and middle-income countries, the oral health of a large proportion of the population has been neglected, increasing oral health inequalities. In high-income countries, some receive excessive dental treatment, whilst particularly those with higher needs receive too little dental care. Therefore, an analysis of individual countries' needs, encompassing the training of oral health professionals in a new philosophy of care and attention and the optimisation of the existing resources, is necessary. Distancing from a person-centred focus has prompted individual and societal issues, including under-/overdiagnosis and under-/overtreatment. The person-centred approach considers the perceptions, needs, preferences, and circumstances of individuals and populations. Patient-reported outcome measures, such as self-rated and -reported health, reflect an individual's overall perception of health and are designed to mediate human biology (ie, the disease) and psychology. The usage of patient-reported outcome measures in dentistry to place the individual at the centre of treatment is delayed compared to other areas. This paper discusses some challenges and potential solutions of patient-reported outcome measures in dentistry for achieving universal oral health coverage.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To assess whether periodontitis is associated with cognitive decline and its progression as well as with certain blood-based markers of Alzheimer's disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from a 2-year follow-up prospective cohort study (n = 101) was analysed. Participants with a previous history of hypertension and aged ≥60 years were included in the analysis. All of them received a full-mouth periodontal examination and cognitive function assessments (Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE) and Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]). Plasma levels of amyloid beta (Aß)1-40 , Aß1-42 , phosphorylated and total Tau (p-Tau and t-Tau) were determined at baseline, 12 and 24 months. RESULTS: Periodontitis was associated with poor cognitive performance (MMSE: ß = -1.5 [0.6]) and progression of cognitive impairment (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.8; 95% confidence interval: 1.0-3.1). Subjects with periodontitis showed greater baseline levels of p-Tau (1.6 [0.7] vs. 1.2 [0.2] pg/mL, p < .001) and Aß1-40 (242.1 [77.3] vs. 208.2 [73.8] pg/mL, p = .036) compared with those without periodontitis. Concentrations of the latter protein also increased over time only in the periodontitis group (p = .005). CONCLUSIONS: Periodontitis is associated with cognitive decline and its progression in elderly patients with a previous history of hypertension. Overexpression of p-Tau and Aß1-40 may play a role in this association.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to test the psychometric validity of the adapted and translated Self-Management Ability Questionnaire-Short Form (SMAQ-12) to Portuguese. METHODS: The translation and adaptation of the SMAQ-12 followed international guidelines. We included 280 participants with chronic periodontitis from the Department of Periodontology of the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic. Participants completed the Portuguese version of the SMAQ-12 (SMAQ-12-PT), a 12-item scale with 3 conceptual domains (Role Management, Medical Management, and Emotional Management). The validity of the content, its construct and internal consistency, as well as test-retest reliability were used to estimate psychometric properties. RESULTS: The SMAQ-12-PT showed an interclass correlation coefficient value of 0.90, with a 95% confidence interval (0.79-0.95; P < .001) and high reliability (Cronbach alpha coefficient ranging between 0.78 and 0.94). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed adequate model fit, with comparative fit index of 0.853, goodness-of-fit of 0.947, and a 0.052 value of root mean squared error of approximation. CONCLUSIONS: The SMAQ-12-PT was found to be a valid and reliable instrument in the Portuguese population. Disease management representation for the specialty of periodontology and its impact on periodontal schedules and practices should be evaluated in future studies.

ABSTRACT

This umbrella review aims to appraise the methodological quality and strength of evidence on the association between maternal periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). PubMed, CENTRAL, Web-of-Science, LILACS, and Clinical Trials were searched until February 2023, without date or language restrictions. Two authors independently screened studies, extracted data, performed the risk-of-bias analysis, and estimated the meta-analytic strengths and validity and the fail-safe number (FSN). A total of 43 SRs were identified, of which 34 conducted meta-analyses. Of the 28 APOs, periodontitis had a strong association with preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), PTB and LBW showed all levels of strength, and pre-eclampsia showed only suggestive and weak strength. Regarding the consistency of the significant estimates, only 8.7% were likely to change in the future. The impact of periodontal treatment on APOs was examined in 15 SRs, 11 of which conducted meta-analyses. Forty-one meta-analyses were included and showed that periodontal treatment did not have a strong association with APOs, although PTB revealed all levels of strength and LBW showed only suggestive and weak evidence. Strong and highly suggestive evidence from observational studies supports an association of periodontitis with a higher risk of PTB, LBW, GDM, and pre-eclampsia. The effect of periodontal treatment on the prevention of APOs is still uncertain and requires future studies to draw definitive and robust conclusions.

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcus aureus integrate the list of highly virulent and antibiotic resistant pathogens, mainly due to the mecA gene, associated with methicillin resistance. Given the ubiquity of this species, the aim of this study was to investigate whether closely related mecA+S. aureus found in the environment can be also thrive as clinical isolates and if the respective accessory genome may suggest bacterial adaptation. The genomes of environmental (water, animal facilities, food products, n = 111) isolates were compared with closely related genomes of clinical origin (human patients, n = 103). These genomes, available in the public database NCBI, were analysed for phylogeny, accessory genome, and presence of selected clinically relevant genes (n = 104). The genomes of environmental isolates belonged to 18 multi-locus sequence types (MLSTs), 11 of which also included clinical genomes, a result confirmed based on core-genome analysis. Genes significantly (p ≤ 0.05) more frequent among environmental genomes were related with resistance to ß-lactams (blaI, blaPCI), aminoglycosides (ant(6)-Ia), macrolides (mph(C), erm(B)), enterotoxins (seg, sei, sem, sen, seo, seu) and serine protease functions (splB), among others. Genes significantly more frequent among clinical genomes were associated with resistance to macrolides (erm(C)), phenicols (fexA), fosfomycin (murA), the leucocidin virulence gene (lukS-PV), and serine protease functions (splA, splE). It is suggested that mecA+S. aureus can be exchanged between clinical and environmental settings, with accessory traits (particularly antibiotic resistance, virulence and stress response) possibly being associated with the habitat. The interplay between phylogeny and accessory genome is an interesting contribution to better understanding the ecology and evolution of mecA+S. aureus.

ABSTRACT

Background: One of the main biological mechanisms behind the link between periodontitis and atherosclerotic vascular diseases is vascular endothelial dysfunction. Particularly, circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have been considered a biomarker of altered vascular endothelial function. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate relationship between periodontal inflammation and increased number of circulating EPCs. Design: This is retrospective cohort study. Methods: In this study, 85 elderly patients with a previous history of hypertension were followed up to 12 months. A baseline full-mouth periodontal assessment was carried out, and the amount of periodontal tissue inflamed per subject was calculated as a proxy of periodontal inflammation [periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA)]. The number of circulating EPCs (CD34+/CD133+/KDR+) was determined by flow cytometry from peripheral blood samples collected at baseline and 12 months. Results: Mean concentrations of CD34+/CD133+/KDR+ progenitor cells were higher in periodontitis patients than in those without periodontitis at baseline [55.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 20.8 to 90.0 versus 27.2, 95% CI = 13.6 to 40.8, p = 0.008] and 12 months (114.6, 95% CI = 53.5 to 175.7 versus 19.1, 95% CI = 10.8 to 27.4, p = 0.003). A significant increase over the follow-up was noticed in the group of subjects with periodontitis (p = 0.049) but not in the nonperiodontitis group (p = 0.819). PISA was independently associated with CD34+/CD133+/KDR+ EPCs at baseline (B coefficient = 0.031, 95% CI = 0.005 to 0.058; p = 0.021). The relationship between PISA and CD34+/CD133+/KDR+ EPCs at 12 months was confounded by increased baseline body mass index (B coefficient = 0.064, 95% CI = -0.005 to 0.132; p = 0.066). Conclusion: Periodontal inflammation is associated with high number of CD34+/CD133+/KDR+ EPCs, thus supporting a potential link between periodontitis and endothelial dysfunction.

Cell-based therapies using periodontal ligament stromal cells (PDLSC) for periodontal regeneration may represent an alternative source for mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) to MSC derived from bone marrow (MSC(M)) and adipose tissue (MSC(AT)). We aimed to characterize the osteogenic/periodontal potential of PDLSC in comparison to MSC(M) and MSC(AT). PDLSC were obtained from surgically extracted healthy human third molars, while MSC(M) and MSC(AT) were obtained from a previously established cell bank. Flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, and cell proliferation analyses provided cellular characteristics from each group. Cells from the three groups presented MSC-like morphology, MSC-related marker expression, and multilineage differentiation capacity (adipogenic, chondrogenic, and osteogenic). In this study, PDLSC expressed osteopontin, osteocalcin, and asporin, while MSC(M) and MSC(AT) did not. Of note, only PDLSC expressed CD146, a marker previously applied to identify PDLSC, and presented higher proliferative potential compared to MSC(M) and MSC(AT). Upon osteogenic induction, PDLSC exhibited higher calcium content and enhanced upregulation of osteogenic/periodontal genes compared to MSC(M) and MSC(AT), such as Runx2, Col1A1 and CEMP-1. However, the alkaline phosphatase activity of PDLSC did not increase. Our findings suggest that PDLSC might be a promising cell source for periodontal regeneration, presenting enhanced proliferative and osteogenic potential compared to MSC(M) and MSC(AT).

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of arthrocentesis followed by hyaluronic acid infiltration treatment (ASH) and mandibular exercise therapy (MET) in patients with symptomatic disc displacement without reduction (DDwoR) by examining pain intensity (VAS), mandibular range of motion (MO), and quality of life (QoL). Fifty-two patients were randomly allocated into two groups, MET (N = 26) and ASH (N = 26), and therapy was applied at the baseline and one month after. Patients were followed up at 1 and 12 months after the baseline assessment. Clinical and patient-reported outcomes were compared at the baseline, 1-month follow-up, and 12-month follow-up. The study found no significant differences in VAS and MO between the ASH and MET groups at the baseline. However, while not significant, it was noted that the ASH group showed higher values for MO. Regarding OHIP-14 at 1 month of follow-up, the ASH group showed significant improvements in physical pain (p > 0.01), physical and psychological disability (p = 0.043 and p = 0.029), and handicap (p = 0.033). At the 12-month follow-up, the ASH group showed significant improvements in functional limitation, psychological discomfort, psychological disability, and handicap (p = 0.008, p = 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.005, respectively). ASH treatment did not reduce pain or improve mandibular range of motion more than physical therapy in patients with symptomatic DDwoR. However, ASH could be preferable given its positive long-term effects on patients' quality of life. The clinician's main objective is to prioritize the treatment plan order with a focus on the patient's quality of life. Accordingly, healthcare professionals should consider ASH as a treatment option for patients with symptomatic DDwoR who desire long-term improvement in their quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) are key promoters of microbial evolution. These elements can be located extrachromosomally or integrated into the chromosome. Well-known examples of chromosomally integrated MGEs (ciMGEs) are integrative and conjugative/mobilizable elements (ICEs and IMEs), and most studies to date have focused on the biological mechanisms that shape their lifestyle. It is crucial to profile the diversity and understand their distribution across the microbial community, as the number of genome sequences increases exponentially. Herein, I scanned a collection of >20 000 bacterial and archaeal non-redundant genomes and found over 13 000 ciMGEs across multiple phyla, representing a massive increase in the number of ciMGEs available in public databases (<1000). Although ICEs are the most important ciMGEs for the accretion of defense systems, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, IMEs outnumbered ICEs. Moreover, defense systems, AMR, and virulence genes were negatively correlated in both ICEs and IMEs. Multiple ciMGEs form heterogeneous communities and challenge inter-phylum barriers. Finally, I observed that the functional landscape of ICEs was populated by uncharacterized proteins. Altogether, this study provides a comprehensive catalog of nucleotide sequences and associated metadata for ciMGEs from 34 phyla across the bacterial and archaeal domains.

ABSTRACT

The nasal mucosa is the main gateway for entry, replication and elimination of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the pathogen that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (COVID-19). The presence of the virus in the epithelium causes damage to the nasal mucosa and compromises mucociliary clearance. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens in the nasal mucociliary mucosa of patients with a history of mild COVID-19 and persistent inflammatory rhinopathy. We evaluated eight adults without previous nasal diseases and with a history of COVID-19 and persistent olfactory dysfunction for more than 80 days after diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Samples of the nasal mucosa were collected via brushing of the middle nasal concha. The detection of viral antigens was performed using immunofluorescence through confocal microscopy. Viral antigens were detected in the nasal mucosa of all patients. Persistent anosmia was observed in four patients. Our findings suggest that persistent SARS-CoV-2 antigens in the nasal mucosa of mild COVID-19 patients may lead to inflammatory rhinopathy and prolonged or relapsing anosmia. This study sheds light on the potential mechanisms underlying persistent symptoms of COVID-19 and highlights the importance of monitoring patients with persistent anosmia and nasal-related symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) is a short presynaptic protein with an active role on synaptic vesicle traffic and the neurotransmitter release and reuptake cycle. The α-Syn pathology intertwines with the formation of Lewy Bodies (multiprotein intraneuronal aggregations), which, combined with inflammatory events, define various α-synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson's Disease (PD). In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on α-Syn mechanistic pathways to inflammation, as well as the eventual role of microbial dysbiosis on α-Syn. Furthermore, we explore the possible influence of inflammatory mitigation on α-Syn. In conclusion, and given the rising burden of neurodegenerative disorders, it is pressing to clarify the pathophysiological processes underlying α-synucleinopathies, in order to consider the mitigation of existing low-grade chronic inflammatory states as a potential pathway toward the management and prevention of such conditions, with the aim of starting to search for concrete clinical recommendations in this particular population.
